Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Karibu (welcome) to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences popularly known by its acronym FASS. The faculty offers over thirty certificate, diploma and degree programmes. The programmes are designed meet local and global challenges and well support the realization of vision 2030.  Among recent masters degree programmes introduced are Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Master of Arts in Security Management. The programmes are run by more than fifty highly qualified and experienced academic staff. The Faculty comprises of four departments namely: Department of Economics; Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics; Department of Peace Security and Social Studies and; Department of Philosophy, History and Religion.

Course taught in these departments cover diverse disciplines such as Anthropology, Community Development, Criminology, Economics, History, Literature, Linguistics, Kiswahili (language/lugha), Kiswahili (Fasihi), Philosophy, Sociology, Statistics and Religious Studies. All the departments are housed in a modern building equipped with language laboratories, computer facilities, and lecture theatres/classrooms.

Career opportunities open for graduates of the faculty include teaching, banking, management, crime and security management, policing, law, accounts, statistics, community development etc.

The Faculty’s mission is to produce graduates whose integration and professional contribution to society promotes the advancement of humanity.

Masters Programmes

Application forms may be obtained from the Director,Board of Postgraduate studies upon payment of a prescribed Non-refundable fee and returned duly
completed.


  1. All applicants for registration shall be processed in the first instance through the relevant Department in which registration is sought. The Department shall then
  2. forward all such applications with appropriate comments to the Faculty board concerned for approval Egerton University Statutes 2008 51 and onward transmission to the Board of Postgraduate studies.
  3. Applicants shall be admitted to only one Degree programme at a time.
  4. Admission shall be confirmed by letter from the Direct, Board of Postgraduate Studies
  5. Admission shall be offered to holders of a Bachelor's Degree with an Upper Second Class Honours or above or equivalent qualification from recognized Institutions.
  6. In exceptional cases, the Senate may also admit to the Master's programme a non-holder of Upper Second Class Honours provided that such candidate can, on the basis of the research and other scholarly work done, demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Senate qualification to undertake postgraduate studies.
  7. Subject to approval by the Senate, Departments may formulate regulations requiring applicants to have attained other academic qualifications as may be consistent with the goals of their Master's programmes or to appear for interview to determine their suitability for admission.   8. In exceptional cases, holder of lower second class honour may be admitted if they have two years of relevant experience.

latest News and Events

1. Research Funding.

Dr. H Wario won a three year grant to the tune of KSH 22 Million from the VW Foundation, Germany. This Grant will go towards funding a research project titled: Jihad for All? Religious Knowledge, Counter- Normality and De-Radicalisation Strategies in Kenya.
